St. Aubin's Harbour
The harbour was completed in 1700, its raison d`etre was the discovery of Newfoundland and the huge cod stocks offshore. Jersey traders set out to fish these waters and to bring back their `salted` cod for sale in Europe. Today, Jersey names, such as Cabot, are common in the Newfoundland telephone book and at Rencontre, east of the Ramea Islands are two hills named St. Helier and St. Aubin.
The Bulwarks
Walking along the The Bulwarks you will see the granite fronted houses built into the hillside by the cod merchants, smugglers and privateers whose trade-legal and illegal-was responsible for the areas wealth between the 16th and late 19th centuries.
we normally come to st.aubin twice a year for 4/5 days. But this time we will be coming during the second week of february, and we understand that most hotels are closed.
Would u be kind enough to mail us a list of hotels that are open, possibly on the bulwarks and with a sea view...those with reduced rates will obviously be preferred.
thanks and best regards
